![]() ![]() Disposable aluminum plates with photo-sensitive emulsion are used to make thousands of reproductions quickly and cheaply.Ī few artists still use Bavarian limestone and hand-cranked presses to produce small numbers of original prints. Today lithography is used commercially to print newspapers, magazines, books, posters and labels. Although Senefelder's process is known as lithography today, he originally called it "chemical printing", because it was based on the chemical properties of limestone, greasy ink and water. Because the greasy drawing repels water, the ink sticks only to the drawing. By dampening the stone's surface, he could roll greasy ink onto the drawing and print an image of his drawing on paper. He failed at this endeavor, but found that he could bond a grease pencil drawing to the stone permanently. In 1798, German playwright Alois Senefelder was attempting to etch lines into the local Bavarian limestone that was used for paving and building. ![]() The English word "lithography" comes from the Greek roots "litho" (stone) and "graph" (writing). ![]()
